Andrew Goodwin’s Theory on Music

Andrew Goodwin’s Theory on Music – Main Points

·      Pop videos are made around songs, and they do not have a traditional narrative structure
·      Pop videos makes the singer appear to be a narrator and character
·      The singer may look into the camera directly, to try and involve the audience

Pop videos do ‘Pop’ because there is quite a lot of repetition in the video, such as repetition of the images and lyrics. Also the audience will be aware of the genre by the rhythm of the song. The song would also have a wide audience and as its Popular may appear on the TV and radio many times, therefore repeating itself, and keeping the audience aware of that song.

Leona Lewis – Bleeding Love (Illustration)

Has a video where she is expressing her feelings and is very emotional, also as she sings in the video, there is drama happening between the actors.

Rihanna – What Now (Amplification)
In the song she is talking about a boy, but in the video she is isolated and is the only character in the video doing extreme movements, Adding greater meaning to the lyrics.

Lady Gaga – Bad Romance (Disjuncture)
In the song Lady Gaga is singing about a bad romance, but in the video it does not relate at all and she is dancing in crazy costumes, which has nothing to do with a relationship.
