Research - Mulveys Theory

Mulveys talks about the 'male Gaze' and how music videos and the film audience view characters from a perspective of a heterosexual male.

This means that cameras will focus mainly on a women's body especially her breasts or her back side.
Mulveys emphasises on the fact that the women's body is an object or even a prop that is used to stimulate a male response.

many lines that you hear in modern pop, hip hop, R&B or rap songs talk about a women's body rather than her personality.

Mulveys ideas can be applied to music videos that women make. Women are used as props in some music videos for example;

snoop dog - Wet

This video is very sensual and explicit. In my opinion the only reason for the women is to cover up how terrible the song is.
question; do you remember what colour and design the man's scarf was when he got out of the limousine?,
most likely you don't. most of the attention was on the female body. This proves Mulveys point that a lot of videos are based on the heterosexual males likings.

However Malveys Theory can be criticised because some women like the attention. for example looking at 'Anaconda' by Nicki Minaj and 'Booty' by Jennifer Lopez. Both videos show the females showing of their bodies and the camera focusing a lot on their back sides.
